 Fishing the Boyne.

The Gladstone Observer.
Boyne - Tannum HookUp.
The Biggest Fishing Competition Held In Queensland.

Even if you have never wet a line, this competition is the perfect opportunity to start. All categories of fishing are covered in this competition from estuarine to the off shore reef, having no restrictions on where you can fish and all age group are welcome.
All fish have to be cleaned at weigh in, as the norm, and caught less than 24 hours prior. With numerous daily prizes and giveaways throughout the weekend.

The competition gets under way at 7pm; on the Friday evening of June long weekend, and comes to an end Sunday evening taking on a festive atmosphere with live bands, the announcement of all prize winners, and ending with a colourful fireworks display.

The 2005 competition, the tenth anniversary competition proved to be the biggest and most successful yet with over three thousand entrants participating. A total of ten boats went as nightly ticket prizes. There was also a tempting range of updates for the keen fisherman to ponder over.

The one every one was after, the major seniors prize.
A 'Cruise Craft 575 Outsider' powered by a 115 hp Mercury.

I didn't manage to catch the names of this father and son team or the actual weight of these two beautiful Barramundi specimen although I did manage to overhear that they were actually caught with lures at Lake Awoonga though I have seen good size Barra caught at the river mouth.

To the delight of fishos and onlookers a mixed bag from Coral Trout, Mackeral, Schnapper, Bream, Whiting, Red Emperor and a myriad of other species were presented daily at the official weigh in. Prizes in the form of fishing equipment were awarded to the winner of the various categories.

With loads of entertainment, fun and food, capped off by fireworks over the Boyne River, The comp attracts thousands of visitors annually -many don't fish - just here for the pleasure of holidaying in this truly beautiful area.
With shadows begining to draw along the ground on the Sunday afternoon, the weigh in slowly drawing to a conclusion participants and visitors alike began to gather for one enjoyable nights entertainment and the drawing of the fisherman's prize of prizes....

The HookUp of course takes place on only one weekend of the year, but visitors are welcomed year round!

Congratulations must be given to the organising committee, the many helpers who dedicate hours of their time in making the competition the great success it has become and the great financial benefit it is to the Boyne -Tannum area. The community spirit, effort and time these guys put in is unparalleled and to be admired as is the many sponsors who support this event.

On any given sunny day there is always someone wetting a line along the banks of the Boyne and there will always a spot for you to savour the sunshine, hospitality, and joys of fishing in one of Australias most beautiful holiday spots!

They are still there just waiting for you.
